Putesy ” P.L.” Pyles passed away on September 12, 2024, at Greenville Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness. He is survived by his only son Byron M. Pyles of Texas. Putesy was born June 2, 1939, in Laurens S.C. He was the only child of Albert and Gracie Pyles. He was married to the former Maria McAlister over 50 years until her death in 2017.

Putesy graduated from the former Sanders school in Laurens and South Carolina State College (now university) in Orangeburg S.C. He served in the U.S. Air Force before a teaching career in Greenwood S.C. He taught at Brewer middle school and Greenwood High School. He was a passionate Biology teacher who won District 50 Teacher of the year.

Putesy later became an assistant Principal at Laurens District 55 High School where he would finish his full-time career. He also worked a few years as Principle of the Laurens evening alternative school where he was recognized for helping to improve Laurens County High School graduation rates.

Final arrangements are being handled privately by Upstate Cremation Services of Laurens S.C.

To Byron and the rest of the family we wish you well. God’s grace, comfort, and peace are enough, however we offer the little bit of love and encouragement we have to offer which we know is only drops in the bucket of God’s well of grace. I had no idea when I left Putesy’s side on that Wednesday that it would be the last time I would see him. I’m so grateful for the spirit prompting me to go and pray with him. He was so peaceful and beamed with strength. He will certainly be missed. He treated me much like a son for so many years. I’m so grateful for the sleepovers, beach trips, summer work opportunities and working together in the ministry as well. Every time I crank the Mercedes it reminds me of him. Now my son is driving a Mercedes all from the influence of one man’s passion for cars. Now that the transition is complete we rejoice with him and the angels in heaven. Welcome home!

I am so sorry to see that my friend Putesy has passed away. He was a long time customer of mine when I worked at Lawson's gun shop. He always took time to talk to me and we made quite a few trades of the years. Putesy was a good guy with a wealth of knowledge and he will be missed.

It was a pleasure to work with Mr Pyles when I worked in Laurens District 55. Always had an open mind to help!

Mr Pyles was at Laurens High School while I was a student. He always had a smile on his face and was loved by all. He was a positive, calm presence. The school was better because of him. My condolences to his family. He will be missed!
